The Current Mod-5...

These are some of Lauren's great photos from her site visit to check out the current mod-5. To check out her feedback to the group head to the 'Architecture 3B' blog in my 'team blogs' list to the right of the page!

Adaptable Architecture vs Modular Architecture

I found this video expressed the ideas of utilising sliding and folding parts to not only adapt spatially but also environmentally in terms of shading devices and windows. I think consideration of these factors are vitally important when contemplating architecture that must be able to respond to all landscapes and climatic conditions. To me the use of sliding and folding parts seems the logical answer to the relationship between material and space in relocatable design but maybe I need to think a little more outside the square?

One other alternative that is already adopted in the mod-5 design is modular architecture. This video demonstrates its advantages, however the repetitiveness of the main unit makes the esing as a whole seem very boring...

Esquisse 1: A RARE Concept

Project 1 will focus on the redesign of the portable classroom building with the aim of presenting a final proposal that could not only improve the learning and spatial environments of the user/s but also have the potential to become an environmentally friendly alternative for the future.

The RARE exercise focused on the 'adaptability' of space through the modes of folding, inflating, hinging, stacking etc. of materials. The project was challenging and explored methods of folding and expanding materials to adapt to different spatial conditions. The exercise was also effective in kick-starting ideas for the rest of the project through contemplating folding/modular units for our redesign of the Mod 5 portable classroom.
